Our grandparents also lost aircraft in numbers that would be considered unacceptable today. If you read about any of the big bomber raids, the numbers that had to ditch or turn back due to mechanical problems tends to be quite high.

Agreed, also I believe I recall that something like 1/2 of all losses were in training exercises.
